China Unicom launches commercial 'Redberry' Push Mail service

Shanghai. April 3. INTERFAX-CHINA - China Unicom, the second largest
Chinese mobile operator, launched China's first commercial Push Mail
service Monday in Beijing, targeting business users on its CDMA 1X
network.
The commercial Push Mail service, named "RedBerry," is similar to
BlackBerry from Canada-based Research In Motion Limited (RIM). The
service automatically sends email to mobile devices whenever there is a
new message.
The RedBerry service was developed by Beijing-headquartered Facio
Software and based on the China Unicom multimedia email platform. It
supports various file formats such as text and graphics, as well as
audio and video streaming. The service allows up to 5,000 text
characters per email and a maximum 100 kilobytes in attachments.
At present, the Push Mail service is available to China Unicom's CDMA
multimedia email subscribers across the country.
A standard 5 megabyte email account costs RMB 5 (USD 0.6) per month,
with additional RMB 0.3 (USD 0.04) for each email delivered. A deluxe
account with 50 megabytes in size costs RMB 10 (USD 1.25) a month, while
an RMB 30 (USD 3.75) a month business account has 200 megabytes of email
space.
Despite Push Mail's popularity in North America and Europe, push-based
email service is still unfamiliar to Chinese mobile phone users.
China Mobile, the large mobile carrier in the country, is currently
testing Push Mail service with RIM. However, China Mobile has not
announced a timetable on commercial launch.
